What is supernova and how is it formed?

There are two main types:

Type I - a star orbiting around a white dwarf star which is very dense and small. Matter is pulled off the bigger star and falls onto the small dense one. Eventually there's too much matter on the dense star which causes it to collapse. On the rebound it explodes, completely destroying the star.

Type II - a very big star runs out of fuel and collapses. On the rebound, the outer parts explode, destroying the star.
